Dog lovers know how much dogs enrich their lives, and this is just the movie for us! Part real-life experience and part fiction from Director Lawrence Kasdan’s life with his dog, Darling Companion is about many types of companionship – between a stray dog rescued from the freeway and the family who took him in, and all the intricacies of the family’s connections. The growing distance between partners in a long-lived marriage, the delight of new-found love in mid-life, and the future promise of young love is part of Kasdan’s closer look at companionship.  When “Freeway” is lost on a walk in the woods, everyone is shaken into the urgency of now, joining in the search for the dog.

This is Director Kasdan’s first independent film and what a great cast he has working for scale! Kevin Kline, Diane Keaton, Dianne Wiest, Sam Shepard, Richard Jenkins, Elisabeth Moss, Mark Duplass, and Ayelet Zurer.

Kasdan said the film began when he and wife Meg adopted a shelter dog in LA, and later lost him during an outing in the Rockies.  They searched for Mac for three weeks. The whole town, friends and family were involved – flyers were up everywhere – and just when they were about to give up a stranger recognized the dog from the flyer, playing with her dogs by the river. Meg’s sister’s dog story was woven in the movie too – she saw a stray dog on a Detroit freeway and had to save him.  The “original” Freeway.

In his Director’s Statement, Kasdan said he felt the dogs who played “Freeway” in the movie needed to be mixed breeds. Kasey, a mixed multi-colored Collie who had been abandoned in the desert with a rope collar embedded in his neck, and Kuma, an Aussie mix, fit that need. Both were shelter dogs adopted by trainers as having the right stuff. Now seasoned animal actors, Kasey and Kuma are with Good Dog Animals.

Release date (NY/LA) is April 20 and you can check out Darling Companion on Facebook – enjoy the trailer!

This film sounds incredible! Just the type to make me cry in a good way. It probably won't hit theatres here but I'll definitely search for it on DVD!

I am going to have to go see this. It looks amazing!
