Interview with Paul Armstrong, CEO, Earthbath

I had an opportunity to book some time with Paul Armstrong, CEO, Earthbath, at the H H Backer Christmas Pet Products Show in Chicago. I headed off to check out this seventeen year old company’s totally natural line of shampoos, spritzs, foams and wipes and hear about how a new aquisition took a company with a list of charitable acts as long as their 50 plus item product line, down a new road of good works.

I asked Armstrong to give us some insight into how he got into this business:

Friends started the company 17 years ago and at the time I was a product developer and had a product that applied, so I went to talk to them about the pet industry. Essentially said they were out and if I wanted to buy the company they would sell it to me.

I had no idea what I was getting into, but did have a genuine love of dogs and the green idea was very interesting and novel. I bought the company. My workers and I spent a lot of time in pet stores talking to pet owners trying to figure out what they needed. Little by little we grew the line according to those findings. The line expanded from the original three to thirteen shampoos that address skin, coat, allergy, hot spots and other issues.  From there we developed convenience products for in-between shampoos, from coat shine and fragrance to a foam waterless product to wipes.

The business literally started in my apartment–there were a couple of us and I still have this vivid memory of Mandy…and what’s Mandy’s last name, sorry Mandy!, but Mandy was surrounded by a million little samples we put together while watching Oprah in my living room which I then loaded in my smokin’ Subaru station wagon.  Now we’re sold in all 50 States and in 7 countries. We were green when green was still a color.  Our ingredients are toxic free with no parabens, dyes, or artificial fragrances.

I’m especially happy to talk to companies about the good they are doing by doing well in their businesses.  I really enjoyed hearing about this new product and the surprising and very different project that ensued.
