FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – CINCINNATI, June 9, 2010 – The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) (NYSE:PG) is voluntarily recalling specific lots of its Iams canned cat food in North America as a precautionary measure. Diagnostic testing indicated that the product may contain insufficient levels of thiamine (Vitamin B1), which is essential for cats. Cats that were fed these canned products as their only food are at greater risk for developing signs of thiamine deficiency.
The following Iams canned cat foods are included:
Product Name/Date on Bottom of Can
Iams ProActive Health canned Cat and Kitten Food – all varieties of 3 oz & 5.5 oz cans 09/2011 to 06/2012
This recall is limited to only Iams canned cat food distributed in North America. No other Iams pet food is involved.
Early signs of thiamine deficiency may include loss of appetite, salivation, vomiting and weight loss. In advanced cases, signs may include ventroflexion (downward curving) of the neck, wobbly gait, falling, circling and seizures. Contact your veterinarian immediately if your cat is displaying any of these signs. If treated promptly, thiamine deficiency is typically reversible.
Consumers who have purchased canned cat food with these codes should discard it. For further information or a product refund call P&G toll-free at 877-340-8826 (Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM EST).”

So much for “complete & balanced” eh?
Like I said in my tweet earlier today. I’ve never seen a recall on my dogs’ “raw” food. =P
Yes, and it's not like this can't happen to any company. Things go wrong in all the mixing and apportionment of ingredients and…you sound like you have the same relief I have to know where all the ingredients in your dogs food comes from. While I home cook and rehydrate foods for Tashi, you have the raw fresh from the butcher's. In this case it's the kittehs who could be caught in a bad place.
Since I found Fairway Market, the grocery store that I mentioned in my last Friday post, that's where I'll be buying my dog's food from now on. It's a grocery store, so everything is for human consumption.
It's just not surprising to me anymore. Recall after recall after recall. How many times does this have to happen before people become fed up?
Check out ConsumerAffairs.com. Do a search for Nutro, they appear to be the company with the most pet food recalls in history.
Yes, that's Lisa McCormick, isn't it. I go there whenever there's food trouble – I remember her FOIA foray…and the latest accusation against Nutro from the lab that I think TAPF uses has not yet been confirmed by the FDA that I know of. I had an interim message on this point from Renee at Nutro but nothing that confirms that lab finding. All of this disallowing independent labs to check things is just senseless. There are testing standards for heaven's sakes.
Anyone hear about the green bag of jams dog food containing rat poison? I have 3 dogs that have been vomiting and bloody stools. I suggest you stay away from Iam’s until they get their food straight. Check out the complaints on consumer affairs.
