I know this splits your shopping up, but if it's a budget problem why pay more for *both* dogs, when only one needs the special attention? We all do the best we can for our dogs, and the more we know about dog food it seems the more we end up spending. But there are many other great dog foods - not on your local supermarket shelf, I'm afraid - but go through the Whole Dog Journal and check out what they say about foods you have been interested in. This way your Redmoon will last.

Oh, and I forgot to say we have to get accustomed to paying a price for quality dog food - the supermarket stuff is cheap because it's made of cheap ingredients. We don't expect to pay steak prices for hot dogs, just as we should not expect to pay peanuts for a dog food that actually provides *optimal* nutrition and not simply "adequate" nutrition.

I just recently heard about Redmoon, and I bought a trail size for about $11 with 2 supplements. Since I have 2 dogs, one who is a young Chi/Yorkie mix (no heatlth issues), and a 9 year old yorkie who has Pancreatitis, I need a special food. Ideally it would be one that is good for my older dog, since the younger one can wat anything. It has been very hard to find a kibble that is low in fat and prevents pancreatic episodes. I have found just that for them with Redmoon. They love the taste and no episodes! I just ordered a 27lb bag. This may sound catty, but it really seems a lot higher priced than some of the higher end kibble in the stores. I am paying double what I was paying. I wish they had coupons. Seems I will be needing to save money before my next order...

Hi, Luz - thanks for sharing your experience with us;) Just a quick question - with all the prep that goes into this custom-made pet food, why do you feel compelled to add more protein? This is just an informal survey, since so many vets have commented on not mixing more foods into kibbles since that action takes the food out of "balance." I can see people's reasoning when they buy dog food with poor proteins leading the ingredients, so is this a practice that has become a habit or do you just like seeing whole food in your dog's bowl? Thanks for stopping by;-D

Since Red Moon is customized, they probably do not fall into that "30 days" swtiching the meat and they don't have to tell you; that is a very interesting point you make, however. The head of this company mentioned he started Red Moon because he didn't like what the industry was doing. I think even custom companies must choose to serve the majority of dog owners for financial viability, even while they do what they can to make things better for the segment of dog-owners whose dogs are burdened with multiple allergies.

I am sorry to hear that your poor pup is so allergic! I also home-cook for my dogs and have for more than 15 years. Have you tried Honest Kitchen? Not really kibble, but nothing wrong with that=)

Thanks for sharing this information, Carolyn

My dogs have been on Red Moon for three weeks now. I have a Coton puppy and a 1 yr old Bichon poo. I have tried both the chicken and Lamb 2.5 lb bag and they absolutely love it. Before Red Moon I dealt with too many stool issues. Orijen gave both my dogs loose stool and neither of them would go near candidae. Acana was good for my Coton but had the same effect on my Bichon as Orijen and for practicality sake I wanted to feed one kibble to both my babies and Red Moon seems to work. I do supplement their kibbles with real meat cuts that I make for them.

The only problem is, that contrary to their claims that because they are grain free they are allergen free, my dog is allergic to something in every one of their base formulas! Allergies can be to ANYTHING not just grains (though common). For instance, my dog is allergic to chicken, turkey, white potatoes, oats, peanut butter, and rice. Everyone of their base recipes (which are unchangeable at this point) still have one or more of those things. I cook for my dog (duck, beef, pork, venison, sweet potatoes and barley), but would love to find a kibble for travelling that she can eat. Other commercially available dog foods can change their recipe and say, put chicken in their "lamb and rice", and as long as they go back to the listed ingredients within like 30 days they don't have to tell you! That usually results in a nice vet bill for me... they is no actual truth in labelling so be very careful. This was straight from a dog food rep when I called the company whose food I tied thinking it was ok. Hives everywhere!
