Dogs have long been used by researchers for various tests. One such project that made headlines in most areas & newspapers was the Russian government’s use of dogs for space travel, between 1957 and 1961. The first dog they sent up was named Laika (Barker in Russian). Here is a list of the dogs that went up.

Bars (Panther or Lynx)
Lisichka ( Little Fox)
Belka (Squirrel)
Strelka (Little Arrow)
Pchelka (Little Bee)
Mushka (Little Fly)
Damka (Little Lady)
Krasavka (Beauty)
Chernushka (Blackie)
Zvezdochka (Little Star).
Verterok or Veterok (Little Wind)
Ugolyok or Ugolek (Little Piece of Coal)
Five of the dogs died in flight:
