Chanel. The name evokes the timelessness of excellence and the confident sense of self often described as “style.” Chanel the dachshund definitely has style. Even without pearls…even as an aging Diva!
At 140 human years, the 20 -year-old Chanel will be published in the Guinness Book of World Records, set to hit the stands in September. May 8th will mark her 21st birthday–what a milestone! She’s lived quite an adventurous dog life. Adopted from a shelter in Virginia by a single Mom in the Army, she’s lived through a house fire, an overseas posting in Germany, time at West Point, a move to California, and then back to Long Island where she has survived three other dachshund family members. A compelling story that even Jay Leno wants to share on his show! You can read all about it at Newsday.
Program Note
The powerful HBO documentary Death On A Factory Farm will air Monday night at 10pm/9C. Synopsis: “Over 10 billion animals are raised on factory farms each year. …There is no statute anywhere with respect to euthanization of animals in a production facility. It is up to private organizations and individuals to bring abuses to law enforcement attention…”

Greetings from Sydney, Australia.
I’m sorry to rain on your picnic, but Chanel is NOT the world’s oldest dog, and needs to live much longer to justify the title. Many dogs are (or were) older than Chanel.
Guinness Book of World Records requires written proof of all claims, which rules out many older animals.
OhmyNewsInternational has published a story I wrote about the world’s oldest dog, an Australian sheepdog which lived in Rochester, Victoria (130 miles north of Melbourne) for 29 years, five months and seven days.

You are welcome to copy it.
Cheers, Eric.

No worries about the rain, Eric. Thanks for sharing your article and I recommend it. I appreciate your input. Guinness is Guinness. Their requirements, while not fair to the real oldies out there that can’t prove it with acceptable paperwork, make the “Guinness World” their own and not always reflective of the facts. The other end of that argument has to do with fish tales. So the story was reported within the “Guinness world” context.
CHANEL is CURRENTLY the world's oldest dog. The previous record was set by Butch who lived to be 28. Guinness updates its records every year.
