The Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA), December issue, reports results of a phone survey conducted by veterinary students from five vet schools contacting more than 1000 dog or cat owners to answer questions on how pet owners feel about nutrition, pet food, and feeding.
One of the 25 questions asked must have been answered fairly unanimously “I trust pet food manufacturers to provide nutritionally sound, quality products.” given the outcome: people not only don’t trust commercial pet foods, but they don’ t trust vets to recommend food.
Funded by Nestle-Purina, the outcome expressed in the Clinical Summary indicates the pet food company’s take away is that vets need to understand these sensibilities and work around them to present commercial foods as the more nutritious choice over homemade or other alternatives. Buyer beware. Seriously. Read more at Dolittler, a vet blog.
