Yesterday USA Today reported news of a salmonella outbreak in humans that had been traced to peanut paste and peanut butter later sourced as coming from the Peanut Corporation of America out of Georgia. The article suggested that people just avoid foods containing these ingredients until more testing had occurred. This morning, Gina Spadafori of Pet Connection had authored the first report I came across about this new pet treat recall.
An hour ago, Reuters released an update reporting the PCA facility out of Georgia as the sole source of this contamination. The FDA stated that more than 125 products were recalled, ranging from ice cream and cereals to pet foods according to Reuters’ report. PetSmart issued a press release regarding the voluntary recall of their Grreat Choice Dog Biscuit line.
Peanut Butter sold at grocery stores has not been involved according to authorities, and Mars, Hershey’s, and other candy makers have reported that this outbreak does not affect their products.
According to Reuters, the CDC reports that “at least 6 people may have died and at least 483 people have been affected…107 people hospitalized.” More reports are coming in every day, and the CDC expects many more products to be named. Check the FDA site for daily updates(don’t forget to refresh the page).
